Background of the Study:
Gender-based discrimination in the workplace remains a significant issue worldwide, and Nigeria is no exception. In Lokoja, Kogi State, as in many other parts of Nigeria, women face challenges in terms of pay inequality, limited career advancement opportunities, and systemic biases that impede their professional growth. These discriminatory practices are rooted in longstanding gender stereotypes and societal norms that marginalize women in the workforce (Ajibade, 2023).

While there have been legal frameworks such as the Nigerian Constitution and the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill designed to promote gender equality, the practical implementation of these laws in the workplace remains a significant challenge. Women in Lokoja often experience discrimination not only in hiring practices but also in job responsibilities, access to training, and the overall work environment. This study seeks to investigate the extent of gender-based discrimination in Lokoja's workplaces and how it affects women's rights to equal employment opportunities, career development, and workplace safety.

Statement of the Problem:
Gender-based discrimination continues to affect the lives of many women in Lokoja, Kogi State, limiting their professional opportunities and infringing upon their fundamental rights. This study seeks to assess the prevalence of such discrimination, identify the contributing factors, and suggest strategies for combating these discriminatory practices to ensure women’s full participation in the workforce.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the prevalence of gender-based discrimination in workplaces in Lokoja, Kogi State.

  2. To identify the factors that contribute to gender-based discrimination in these workplaces.

  3. To propose strategies for promoting gender equality and reducing workplace discrimination in Lokoja.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the extent of gender-based discrimination in workplaces in Lokoja, Kogi State?

  2. What are the factors contributing to gender-based discrimination in Lokoja's workplaces?

  3. How can workplace policies be reformed to eliminate gender-based discrimination and promote gender equality in Lokoja?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Gender-based discrimination is prevalent in workplaces in Lokoja, Kogi State.

  2. Societal attitudes, stereotypes, and lack of enforcement of gender equality laws contribute to the persistence of gender-based discrimination in Lokoja's workplaces.

  3. Effective policies, awareness programs, and better legal enforcement will reduce gender-based discrimination in Lokoja’s workplaces.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study will focus on gender-based discrimination within formal workplaces in Lokoja, Kogi State. The study is limited by the potential unwillingness of employers to participate due to the sensitive nature of the topic, as well as the possibility of underreporting by female employees due to fear of retaliation.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Gender-based Discrimination: Unequal treatment of individuals in the workplace based on their gender, affecting opportunities, benefits, and working conditions.

  • Workplace Equality: The fair treatment of all employees, regardless of their gender, in terms of pay, promotion, training, and workplace conditions.

  • Gender Stereotypes: Preconceived notions about the roles and abilities of individuals based on their gender, often leading to discriminatory behavior.
